IoT Technology for Toilets
IoT devices can do a lot, including in toilets. Sensors that could detect pregnancy, crystals in urine for kidney stones, blood sugar levels and more. This manufacturer wanted to understand if and how humans would interact with such a device. Beyond the obvious “ice” factor, issues such as size, shape and colour came into play. It completely changed how this company thought about their device and improved the odds for success.
Selecting a Newspaper Content Management System (CMS)
We worked with a U.S. based newspaper and a Latin American national newspaper to provide guidance and advice on selecting a CMS for their newspaper. Critical was understanding their needs for data driven journalism a desire to be independent of programmatic AdTech providers and integrating digital and print.
Deploying Artificial Intelligence in the Workplace
A mid-size enterprise in the U.S. was looking at ways to deploy Artificial Intelligence for Human Resources and candidate selection in the hiring process. We helped them understand potential litigation risks, inclusivity and diversity risks and develop changes to the vendors algorithms to ensure State compliance with diversity laws and educate the board of directors.
Sensors and Seniors: Deploying technology in senior living complexes
An operator of several senior living complexes in Canada was keen to deploy various sensors in resident suites. How would the residents feel about this and what would be the best approach to deploying these devices if they were accepting? Using ethnographic approaches we found seniors to be surprisingly more accepting – depending on the device, placement and method of communication.
Digital Transformation and cultural readiness
A mid-size enterprise with just over 300 employees was seriously considering a digital transformation. They had a lot of legacy technology, from software to hardware. It would mean new systems and thus, new ways of doing things. Getting employee acceptance was critical. In this instance we acted as the interim CIO and used design anthropology and design thinking to foster support and cultural understanding. When the time came, the transformation was on schedule and employees were much more supportive.
Helping a Magazine go Digital First
A Canadian magazine that is fairly successful in the analog print realm knew that in order to go beyond surviving and thrive, it had to become Digital First. We reduced their technology costs, while implementing more collaborative yet lower-costs systems. Built out their analytics capabilities and then guided them to become Digital First. Ad revenues increased, social media and website traffic trebled in just a few months.
Evaluation of public views on digital services
A Canadian provincial government had deployed a number of digital services to citizens through various departments over a seven year period. How were they accepted? What were citizens saying? This was a netnographic research project that analysed public online discussions to gain a sense of the issues, what was good and bad and identify where improvements could be made.
What attracted tourists to a major city and what did they do?
A mid-size Canadian city on the east coast wanted to know what past and potential visitors were saying about the city. They also wanted to know what they did when they got there throughout the year. Using a netnographic research approach we helped them identify how people moved through the city, key clues as to what they really liked, emerging trends and the overall view of the destination. This greatly informed future marketing efforts and lead to an increase in tourist satisfaction.
Monetizing Historical Data
We worked with a group of small regional newspapers that had been operating between 1920’s and 1990’s. Collectively, they held a lot of data in obituaries, traffic accidents and more. We analysed their historical content and helped them develop several different approaches to monetizing their data. This is called Infonomics. Our work helped them reach greater profitability and is still ongoing.
